About Me

The objective of the Philadelphia Community Youth Theatre is to introduce Philadelphia youth to theatre arts as a means of creativity, discipline and development while providing the youth opportunities to cultivate a range of talents. Youth who participate in the program will experience theatre as a channel to build a working mechanism from start to finish. Participants perform before youth audiences, providing an outlet to communicate with their peers through the freedom of the performing arts.

Summer Performance 2007

PCYT Summer Camp Performance
SOWETO REMEMBERED
DATES: Thursday, August 2nd at 12:30 pm and 7:00 pm
LOCATION: CEC'S Meeting House Theatre
3500 Lancaster Ave, 19104
DONATION: $5 adults, FREE children

Four weeks ago, each of the youngsters (between the ages of 9-13) showed up
for a summer performance camp experience. The instructors not
only coached them in the performing arts but, we brought forth some heavy
lessons in African American history and society.

Each child sucked it up. There's not one in the group that lagged behind or
seemed uninterested. We further extended our history research and
discussion to focus on youth as leaders. A week into the process, the youth
decided they wanted to do a performance piece that made reference to the
Soweto Uprising in 1976-77 where youth lead protests that helped to end
aparthied in South Africa.

I hope you have the opportunity to see the performance. If by chance you
are not able to - please just keep in mind that while there is a lot going
on in our world - THERE IS SO MUCH HOPE!
